Cooler temperatures Thursday allowed firefighters to make progress in battling the 3 Sisters wildfire burning 2 miles northwest of Bayview in Bonner County.

By Friday afternoon, the blaze, which was first reported Tuesday, covered 264 acres and was 30 percent contained.

An Idaho Department of Lands incident management team is focusing firefighting operations on preventing the fire from spreading toward private land and timber resources.

There are no structures threatened by the fire at this time, but some are within a mile of it. No evacuations had been recommended as of Friday.

The following roads have been closed until further notice due to fire activity: County Road 22, where the county road ends, and Cherokee Road at Perimeter Road.

The 3 Sisters Fire is burning 1.5 miles north of, but is unrelated to, the Cape Horn Fire, which covered 1,326 acres near Bayview last month.

Through Aug. 31, the Kootenai County Solid Waste Department will provide special containers at the Athol Rural Residential Collection site, located at 7222 E. Howard Road. The primary focus for this temporary service, according to a news release, is to collect woody debris (wood, limbs and brush) left on Kootenai County residential property during the response phase of the Cape Horn Fire.

"Absolutely no other waste will be accepted in these containers," the news release states. "There is limited disposal capacity, so we ask that each resident limit themselves to the equivalent of two pickup loads per day. Please be prepared to provide proof of residency for disposal."
