RATHDRUM - The Rathdrum Parks and Recreation Department is welcoming all pit-masters and lovers of the barbecue craft for the Taste of Rathdrum BBQ Cook-Off.

The third annual cook-off is part of an event happening Saturday that offers a hot-dog-eating contest, live music, food vendors, crafts and a classic car show.

The festivities will start at noon with a large waterslide and games for kids. There will also be several booths, with craft and food vendors for all ages to enjoy.

"It's really a family-oriented event during the day," said Donna Cooper, Rathdrum Parks and Rec department assistant.

In addition to the kids entertainment, Lance Bridges, the Parks and Rec director, said there will be some family fun for the adults also. The 18-and-older hot-dog-eating contest starts at 3 p.m. and will offer prizes for first-place woman and first-place man. There is no cost to register for the eating contest.

There will also be a classic car show that is free to enter and offers a "People's Choice" award. Classic car owners are encouraged to bring and show off their rides.

The cook-off starts at 4 p.m., Cooper said between 5-10 contestants are expected but the deadline to register is Thursday so more could register before then. The winners will be announced at 5 p.m. and will be judged by a panel composed of Parks and Rec commissioners. "The criteria the judges will follow for the barbecue will be based on taste, tenderness, appearance and doneness," Bridges said.

Chicken and ribs will be accepted for judging.

Bridges said there will be side dishes and other delights featuring bacon.

Trophies for the winners will be provided by O'Malleys Sports Pub & Grill. It will honor first-, second- and third-place barbecuers.

The evening's entertainment will begin with the opening of the beer garden at 4 p.m. and live music starting at 6 p.m. The Kelly Hughes Band will take the stage at 6 p.m. and will perform until 9 p.m.

The event will be held at Majestic Park, 5400 W. Majestic Ave. and is open to everyone. Visit www.Rathdrum.org for information.
