COEUR d'ALENE - Eastside firefighters quickly extinguished a fire Friday afternoon that reportedly started in a barn at the intersection of Burma and Gozzer roads near Gozzer Ranch.

According to Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Chief Steve Isaacson, the homeowners were not home when the fire broke out, but luckily a passerby saw the smoke and called.

"Water is a real issue," Isaacson said, adding the fire consumed the outbuilding and about 60,000 square feet of land around the building.

Due to the quick response, the fire was contained before it reached the house and the treeline.

According to neighbors, the home belongs to Steve Geyers and his fiancee, Barbara. Barbara returned to the scene of the fire shortly after firefighters arrived, but said she didn't have much information.

"I don't know how it started. I wasn't home at the time," she said. "All I can tell you is that we lost the barn."

Isaacson said firefighters were going to work into the night to make sure high winds wouldn't revive the fire overnight.

"We will get some foam on that too," he said, adding crews had the fire completely contained.
