Zags to open WCC play at home on Dec. 21

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The West Coast Conference men's basketball season will get off to an even earlier than usual start this season.

Eight of the 10 teams will play on the first night - Monday, Dec. 21.

Gonzaga opens at home, facing Pepperdine on Dec. 21 and Loyola Marymount on Dec. 23. The Zags will play five of their first seven conference games at home - the road games coming New Year's Eve at Santa Clara, and Jan. 2 at San Francisco.

Gonzaga closes out WCC play Feb. 25 at San Diego and Feb. 27 at BYU.

The West Coast Conference men's and women's tournaments are scheduled for March 3-8 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

Bayley moves up to fifth at Northwest Open

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Former Lakeland High standout Derek Bayley shot a 5-under-par 67 on Tuesday and moved into fifth place after the second day of the 54-hole Northwest Open Invitational at Wine Valley Golf Club.

Bayley, who will be a sophomore at Washington State this fall, is at 8-under 134. He shot 69 on Monday.

Derek Barron, who was second at last month's Rosauers Open Invitational at Indian Canyon, shot 65 on Tuesday and is at 16-under 128. He leads by six strokes.

The tourney concludes today.

Hatley finishes third Washington State mid-am

RENTON, Wash. - Reid Hatley of Hayden Lake finished in third place at the 36-hole Washington State Men's Mid-Amateur Championship at Fairwood Golf and Country Club.

Hatley shot 71 on Tuesday and wound up at even-par 144. Tom Brandes of Bellevue, Wash., won it with a 2-under 142 (69-73), and former Seattle Mariners pitcher Erik Hanson was second at 143 (71-72).

The tourney is for players age 25 and older.

Soccer jamboree set for today

COEUR d'ALENE ?- Lake City High will host a boys and girls soccer jamboree today at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

Each match will be one half and is varsity only starting at 2 p.m.

2 p.m. - Lake City vs. Sandpoint. 2:50 - Coeur d'Alene vs. Sandpoint. 3:40 - Lake City vs. Lakeland. 4:30 - Coeur d'Alene vs. Lakeland.
