Trailing by eight shots heading into Wednesday’s final round of the Northwest Open at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla, former Lakeland High and current Washington State sophomore Derek Bayley heated up.
So much so, he led the tournament with just six holes to play.
That was, until two-day leader Derek Barron — the professional at Tacoma Golf Center — got even hotter.
Barron carded four birdies in a row and shot a 32 on the back nine Wednesday for a three-shot victory, spoiling a 6-under 66 in the final round by Bayley, who starts his sophomore year at Washington State on Monday.
“I just knew I was eight back to start the round and knew I had to put some pressure on him,” Bayley said.
“Through six, I saw that he was 3-over on the day and I was within three strokes right away. I knew I was right there with him,” Bayley added.
After the 12th hole, Bayley held a 1-shot lead over Barron.
“I just had to stay focused and knew I couldn’t control him and what he did,” Bayley said. “But I gave it a good run at it. I was a little surprised I was in the lead. They had live scoring, but I had to focus on myself and keep it within myself at the end of the day.”
Bayley finished second with a 69-67-66—202.
Barron, second at last month’s Rosauers Open in Spokane, finished 63-65-71—199, a tournament record.
The Northwest Open is one of six majors sponsored by the PGA Pacific Northwest Section.
“It was a good tournament for me,” Bayley said. “I came in with the right mindset and knew the course really well. I knew how the greens were and where the pins were at. I was comfortable with my game and definitely happy with the way I played for sure.”
At the turn, Barron went on a birdie streak on the final nine holes and Bayley played his final six holes in even par.
“I’m proud of how I fought,” Bayley said. “I had three bogeys in the tournament, one each day. It’s just a good way to end the summer. I’m heading back to school tomorrow and it’s a good confidence booster for me heading into next year.”
Professional Brady Sharp of Walla Walla Country Club was third with a 65-69-69—203.
