COEUR d'ALENE - Police have arrested two suspects this week in two unrelated arson incidents that occurred on Tubbs Hill and Independence Point this summer.
According to Sgt. Christie Wood, the first 13-year-old suspect was arrested Friday on one count of arson related to the Tiki Hut stand at Independence Point and returned to his father.
But in subsequent interviews, Wood said, the teen allegedly confessed and was taken into custody and charged with two counts of arson, two counts of burglary and two counts of malicious injury to property.
"Our Community Action Team was able to determine the juvenile male as a suspect," Wood said. "Our (School Resource Officers) know a lot of these kids and that is how they are able to track them down."
Wood said there may be more people involved in that investigation.
Tiki Hut owner Randy Folk said he was pleased with the results of the investigation.
Folk said he worked cooperatively with investigators and said they were very good about keeping him updated. Initially Folk said he told investigators he could only think of one ex-employee who might have had an issue with him, but did not want to accuse the teen of anything.
"I just didn't want to jump to conclusions," he said, adding he wasn't trying to be deceptive.
He said he was relieved to learn that the person he had in mind didn't have anything to do with the crimes.
"I really think it is unfortunate that these kids made these poor decisions," Folk said.
The city's Community Action Team was also instrumental in the arrest of another 13-year-old suspect who was taken into custody Thursday afternoon on two counts of arson related to the fires on Tubbs Hill.
"I just learned we took a 13-year-old juvenile into custody at approximately 2 p.m. (Thursday)," Wood said. "The child has been charged at this point with two counts of arson on Tubbs Hill - this includes the large fire that occurred on June 20 during Car d'Lane - and the suspect is being investigated for four additional arsons that occurred on Tubbs Hill this summer."
There have been 14 fires started on Tubbs Hill this year, which is twice the number of fires the Coeur d'Alene Fire Department sees in any given year.
The Community Action Team was able to identify the suspect through a series of interviews with juveniles, Wood said.
"They have worked closely with fire investigators on all of these cases," she said. "The investigation is still ongoing."
