Singers and dancers wanted

The Northwest Sacred Music Chorale is looking for a few good singers - women and men.

Dr. Stan McDaniel, artistic director for the Chorale, will hold auditions Monday, Aug. 31, Tuesday, Sept. 1 and Wednesday, Sept. 2.

The auditions will run from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church in Post Falls.

Each audition is expected to take 10-12 minutes including basic vocalizations and a phrase or two of a hymn. Solo preparations are optional but not required, and no accompanist will be provided.

"We're looking for singers who want to continue the tradition of great choral and classical music, to keep the works alive and vital, and who want to grow and develop their own talent," McDaniel said in a press release.

This season's concert schedule features several works by Randall Thompson, an American master of choral music whose signature pieces include "Testament of Freedom" and "Alleluia."

The music will be enriched with instrumental underpinnings by a brass septet from William Berry's "Clarion Brass Ensemble." Berry, a member of the Spokane Symphony, is world-renowned for his zany arrangements of old standards.

For prospective Chorale singers who wish to find out a bit more about the organization before auditioning for membership, McDaniel plans an informal retreat Saturday, Aug. 29 at the Community Presbyterian Church in Post Falls, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. "We welcome anyone who has an interest in the chorale to attend," he said.

The Chorale schedule includes fall concerts in Coeur d'Alene and at Spokane's Saint John's Cathedral, Christmas music in the same venues, and spring concerts in April in Spokane and Coeur d'Alene.

McDaniel said scheduling auditions in advance is recommended but not required.

More information about the Northwest Sacred Music Chorale is available at the website, NWSMC.org.

Auditions may be scheduled by calling (208) 446-2333, or e-mailing Chorale@NWSMC.org.

Auditions for "Traditions of Christmas," a Radio City Music Hall style holiday show, will be held Aug. 24 at Expressions Dance Studio, 2825 Hwy 41, Post Falls.

A cast of 75 people from ages 8 to 80, with varying ethnicities, is needed for this production.

All roles require singing skills and most roles for adults and teens do not require any dance skills. For those adults and teens with dance skills, there are some very select roles for which candidates may be considered. All children's roles require a high degree of singing and dance skills. Most roles require only one day a week of rehearsals.

Children ages 8-12 can audition from 3-5 p.m. and adult and teen time slots are between 5-8 p.m. Auditioners are asked to prepare 30-60 seconds of a song (no A capella please). There will be an accompanist available, as well as a CD and iPod player. Please bring a headshot/photo and resume and contact Christian@lauralittletheatricals.com to sign up for a time.

"Traditions of Christmas" runs Dec. 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 22 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 12, 13 , 19, 20 and 23 at 3 p.m. and is produced by Laura Little Theatricals. Visit www.traditionsofchristmasnw.com for additional audition and show information.
