COEUR d'ALENE - A major piece of evidence against Sgt. Greg Moore's alleged killer was reviewed by a judge - in private chambers - during a probable cause hearing Wednesday.
Magistrate Barry Watson watched a DVD loaded with the video from Moore's body camera, capturing his run-in with Jonathan D. Renfro and the subsequent shooting on May 5.
Multiple police officers testified about finding Moore lying on a Coeur d'Alene neighborhood street in the early morning hours that day. Moore had been shot in the face and his gun and patrol car were stolen.
Renfro, who is charged with first-degree murder and multiple other felonies, is scheduled to be in court again today as his preliminary hearing continues.
Watson will determine at the conclusion of the hearing whether to move Renfro's case up to 1st District Court for an eventual trial.
A Post Falls Police officer testified he saw a Coeur d'Alene Police Department squad car go racing by him shortly after a patrol car was reported stolen. He said he knew it was the stolen police car because it went by him at 90 mph without the light bar on top activated.
The officer pursued the vehicle but later found it ditched near the Sysco foods facility and Walmart Supercenter near the Idaho-Washington state line.
Officers testified that Renfro was found hiding under a semi-truck's trailer parked near the Walmart.
A K-9 sniffed him out, then police found a gun and flashlight in his hiding spot as well. Earlier, authorities had said Moore's service issued pistol was found near Renfro.
Another handgun was found in a vacant dirt field nearby.
According to an affidavit written by police investigators, filed in court with charging documents, the body camera allegedly shows Renfro shooting Moore.
Moore falls to the ground and is facing skyward.
"A short time later Renfro's face comes back into frame," the document said. "Renfro is seen using a flashlight while searching Sgt. Moore's person."
