SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Former Sandpoint High standout Corinne Ariss scored an unassisted goal early in the second half to break a tie, and North Idaho College went on to beat Tacoma Community College 2-1 in the season opener for both teams.
The game was part of a series of friendlies being played by Northwest Athletic Conference teams this weekend in the Eugene area.
With the ball in the penalty area to the right of the goal, Ariss took a shot which rebounded off a defender and got the ball back. She then took an extra touch to get past the defender and shot again. The second shot deflected off the keeper into the goal in the 56th minute.
“It was a fairly typical first game,” NIC women’s coach Dan Hogan said. “There wasn’t a lot of possession by either team in the first half as both teams were trying to figure out how to play together. The second half was better and we moved the ball around more, earning more chances on goal.”
Alissa Jolliff, a freshman from Lake City, tied the game for NIC with a goal in the 41st minute.
Jolliff scored when Jessica Scott chipped the ball into the penalty area in front of the goal. The Tacoma keeper came out to try to grab the ball after it bounced on the turf, but Jolliff beat her to the ball and headed it into goal.
NIC plays Clark Community College today.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Following a scoreless first half, Hamidou Kante, Jorge Carmona and Irven Perez scored second-half goals for the Cardinals in their season opener, as part of a weekend of NWAC friendlies in the Eugene area.
“It definitely took us a while (to get going),” NIC coach Ken Thompson said. “The smoke was forcing us inside and you can see, organizationally, we were about a week behind where we were before the smoke forced us inside.”
Mitch Markovetz, Tanner Horton and Garrett Boyce teamed for the shutout in goal for the Cardinals, who play Clark College today.
“We’ve got three new attackers, and they each had a piece of a goal, so that was a positive,” Thompson said. “All three of our keepers did well; Garrett Boyce had to deal with some rockets.”
First half — none. Second half — 1, NIC, Hamidou Kante (Jake Kraut), 55:00. 2, NIC, Jorge Carmona (Alec Maldonado), 80:00. 3, NIC, Irven Perez (Chris Wheelock), 89:00.
