Butte took advantage of a short-staffed Glacier wrestling squad on Friday afternoon, capitalizing on four forfeits and winning six weight classes by pins to post a 63-12 dual victory over the Wolfpack at Glacier High School in the season opener for both schools.
“We have a couple kids sick or who were gone over the break and didn’t have their (necessary number of) practices in,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers said of his limited lineup.
“But give Butte credit. They came out aggressive.”
The match opened on a high note with Sam Barber giving the Wolfpack a 6-0 edge with his pin at 152. The fall time — 2:31.
“He’s coming off a great football season and he’s ready to go,” Dankers said of his junior standout.
“He’s looking good,”
Butte’s Bulldogs followed with back-to-back pins, two forfeits and another pin before Glacier picked up its other win at 103 pounds. Caden Willis won by pin in 3:30.
“His first varsity match,” Dankers said of Willis, a freshman.
“He controlled most of it.”
Butte tallied three pins, two forfeits and a decision after that to close out the scoring.
“I think Butte only lost one person from last year,” Dankers said.
“They did a good job of controlling us on top.
“I wanted to see the kids get out there and battle,” he continued.
“I wanted to see where we need to improve and we’ll go from there.”
Glacier is back in action today at the Polson Invitational. Mat action begins at 9 a.m.
