For the first meet, Glacier’s swimmers exceeded the expectations of coach David Lillard Saturday afternoon at The Summit.

“More than I was hoping for,” Lillard said.

“We were trying to emphasize racing, working hard. For them to get best times was more than I could expect.”

Four Glacier school records were set at the Kalispell Invitational.

“That was the biggest highlight,” Lillard said.

AJ Popp set three individual marks and the girls 200 freestyle relay team of Popp, Olivia Gibson, Emma Hornby and Bailey Smith had the other record-setting performance with a time of (1:44.92). They finished seven seconds ahead of the field.

Popp led off the relay with a 100 freestyle record time (55.31). Her other record-setting firsts were in the 200 individual medley (2:13.47) and 100 backstroke (1:00.21).

Colton Babcock of Columbia Falls and Kelsey Ammons and Darragh Mahns, both of Missoula Hellgate, were the meet’s other double winners.

Babcock had event-best times in the 200 (1:48.73) and 500 freestyle (4:52.72).

Ammons won the 100 (58.22) and 200 freestyle (2:06.72) while Mahns was first in the 100 freestyle (50.25) and 100 butterfly (57.15).

Also winning individual events for Glacier were Nate Burnham, 200 individual medley (2:09.59), Olivia Gibson, 50 freestyle (25.79) and Anthony Clason, 100 breaststroke (1:04.97).

“She’s (Popp) been training with the KATS and is in good shape along with Olivia and Emma,” Lillard said.

“Bailey is a runner. I’m really pleased with their start.”

Lillard said Smith had best times in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

On the team front, C.M. Russell, 284 points, won the girls title while the Missoula Hellgate boys, 361, were first.

The Glacier girls, 216, were third.

“For sure, AJ will be a contender for a state championship,” Lillard said.

“The girls will be up there in the relay. That will be very exciting.”

Lillard, who also coaches Flathead, said the Braves and Bravettes have a lot of new swimmers out.

He said Madison Edwards, 100 freestyle, and Luke Barron, 100 backstroke, had best times.
