Arlee, Charlo, and Two Eagle River all got their season started this past weekend at the opening tournament in Frenchtown.

Arlee 35

Drummond 23

The Arlee girls started their tournament this past weekend against Drummond. It was slow going for both teams throughout the first half. Arlee’s full court press stopped Drummond from scoring any points in the first quarter, and Arlee was able to work the ball inside to freshman Alyssia Vanderburg, who stands six feet tall. The second quarter was more of the same, as both teams tried to get something going in their first official game in a year. During the third quarter, Arlee went on a six point run off of their full court press. They were also moving the ball around, but struggled with turnovers. They would score 10 in the third to make the score 22-14. Throughout the game, Arlee’s Vanderburg rebounded well, and had some important offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter to help the Scarlets out. Arlee scored 13 in the fourth compared to Drummond’s nine, and the Scarlets won their game to go to 1-0. Becca Whitesell and Carly Hergett each had eight points for Arlee. Alyssia Vanderburg and Bryndle Goyins each added six.

Arlee 38 Seeley 47

On Saturday, Arlee took on Seeley-Swan, a team that had made winning look very easy against the former Class B Plains Trotters the day before. Seeley came out quick, putting up 15 to Arlee’s six in the first quarter. Seeley, who pressed the entire game the day before, was led by Paige Holmes, who gave the Trotters all sorts of problems. In the second quarter, Arlee managed only four points to Seeley’s eight, making the score 23-10 at halftime. The Scarlets got things going in the third, coming out to score 11 points in the third, then made a comeback in the fourth, scoring 16 to Seeley’s 12. However, that wouldn’t be enough to tally a win, and Arlee lost by a score of 38-47. Allysia Vanderburg had 11 and Morgan Malatare was the second leading scorer with 10.

Arlee takes on Plains on Saturday night in Arlee.

Charlo 49 Darby 32

The Charlo Vikings started off their season against Darby. Charlo’s Cheyenne Nagy came out hot, making two 3’s and a long two, helping put the Vikings up 15-10 after one quarter. In a very Belt Husky-like rotation, coach Bret Thompson subbed his entire bench, which was six players, including four freshmen throughout the entire game. That helped in the long run, as Darby only had two subs, and had two players foul out toward the end of the game. At halftime, the Vikings led 30-17. They never looked back, and won their first game of the season by a score of 49-32. Skyler Frame led all scorers with 12, and Cheyenne Nagy added 10. Freshman Tyrah Hammond had a nice game, rebounding very well and scoring two for the Vikings.

Drummond 32

On Saturday, the Vikings matched up against Drummond in a game that might show how Charlo would match up with Arlee since the Scarlets played Drummond the night before. Drummond would put up a tougher fight than Darby, and the score after one was all tied up. Drummond, who has quite a bit of height, looked to 6’1” Audrie Parke to make some plays over the shorter Vikings. After two, Drummond led Charlo by three points. The Vikings made that difference up in the third, and it was tied going into the fourth. Behind junior Cheyenne Nagy’s 19 points, Charlo was able to pull out the win by one point, sending the Vikings to 2-0 on the season. Mikaylan Roylance and Skyler Frame each added five, and Ashley Tryon had four.

The Vikings play Two Eagle River on Friday.

TER 48

Valley Christian 35

The Two Eagle River girls played their first game of the season against the Valley Christian Eagles in the first game of the tournament. With some roads closed due to ice, the boys’ game happening at the same to time in the other gym was canceled. However, both TER and Valley were able to get to Frenchtown, and Eagles from both schools competed. TER had control of the game for most of the time after the half, and had seven players score to Valley’s five. Among those was TER’s Tyra Michel, who led all scorers with 14. Senior star Casadi Wunderlich added 13, and Whisper Michel had seven.

TER – Tyra Michel 14, Casadi Wunderlich 13, Whisper Michel 7, Naomi Stevens 5, Shay Andrew 4, Danielle Adler 3, Misty Mendoza 2.

TER 21 Granite 56

On Saturday, Two Eagle River took on Philipsburg, who would put up a better fight than Valley did the day before. They took a 15-12 lead after one, then really stepped it up in the second, scoring 12 to TER’s five. That made the score 27-17 at half. The Eagles weren’t able to get things going in the third, and Philipsburg scored 14 to their zero. It was downhill after that, and the Eagles took their first loss of the season, moving to 1-1. On a high note, senior Casadi Wunderlich scored her 500th point in her career during the game, when she put in her ninth point.

The Eagles take on Charlo on Friday in Pablo.
