SANDPOINT — Sandpoint and the Kootenai-Ponderay Sewer District are working on a wastewater treatment study in the wake of the Environmental Protection Agency renewing permits with more stringent rules.

Kody Van Dyk, Public Works director, said the city is working with the Kootenai-Ponderay Sewer District to obtain grants to study regionalized wastewater treatment. The city and the sewer district are both up for National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permits through the state and the EPA.

"It's our ability to discharge our wastewater, in our case into the Pend Oreille River, and Kootenai-Ponderay, it's Boyer Slough and Lake Pend Oreille," Van Dyk said.
