A 22-year-old Hayden man was found dead early Sunday in downtown Coeur d'Alene.

Coeur d'Alene police officers were called at 12:45 a.m. to investigate a suspicious vehicle. They discovered Richard E. Baumgartner in the vehicle parked in a lot near North Third Street and East Indiana Avenue. He was unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head.

Baumgartner was transported by medical personnel to Kootenai Health where he was later pronounced dead.

"This is an active investigation and detectives are interviewing witnesses," stated Det. Jared Reneau, in a press release. "The Kootenai County Coroner’s Office has scheduled an autopsy for Baumgartner. Further information will be released as it becomes available."
