A Liberty Head Double Eagle gold coin was donated to a the Salvation Army red kettle recently at the Columbia Falls Smith’s store.

“Gold coins are donated in the kettles every year around the U.S., but this is the first time I have received one in the 32 Christmas seasons I have worked with the army,” said Maj. Steve Svenson, leader of the Flathead Valley Salvation Army,

The coin, which is one ounce of gold, is valued at $1,060.

The red kettles are the primary fundraiser for the Salvation Army’s social service programs. The goal for the kettles this year is to raise $110,000.

The kettles will be available for donations until Dec. 24. To volunteer, call 257-4357.
