The Badgers basketball team trailed Newport by just a point at the half Saturday, but were unable to make a run late, losing to the Grizzlies 54-47 at home.
Caleb Blackmore led all scorers with 24 points, while Bateman added 12. Kaleb Stockton rounded out the top three scorers for the Badgers with six points.
The Badgers travel to Sandpoint Friday for a matchup against the Bulldogs in the annual Moose Madness game. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.

Ty McDaniel scored 16 points and Robert Owen tossed in another 15 in Newport’s 54-47 victory over Bonners Ferry on Saturday. Caleb Blackmore grabbed 24 points for Bonners Ferry, which trailed by only one at the half but struggled to keep up with Newport offense in the second half.
