HELENA — A House panel has voted to table a bill that would allow Montanans to register to vote online.

The House State Administration Committee tabled House Bill 48 by an 11-9 vote Tuesday. Under the bill, people with a valid Montana driver’s license or ID card could register to vote online.

Democratic Secretary of State Linda McCulloch had asked Republican Rep. Geraldine Custer to sponsor the bill. McCulloch says online registration would save money when compared to paper registration and would make registration more secure.

McCulloch says 24 states have adopted this type of voter registration. This was the third time McCulloch brought this bill before the Legislature.
