Flathead County ended 2014 with an unemployment rate of 6.2 percent in December.

Flathead’s unemployment rate in November was 5.8 percent, up slightly from 5.2 percent in October. It’s a full percentage point higher than in September, the lowest level in more than six years.

Flathead County has a workforce of 41,469 people and gained 1,748 workers during 2014, according to a Montana Department of Labor report released last week.

The county is still ranked 49th among the state’s 56 counties.

Fallon County was ranked No. 1 with an unemployment rate for December of 1.7 percent. Richland County was second with 1.8 percent. Both counties are in Eastern Montana and heavily affected by the Bakken oil boom.

Montana’s unemployment rate continued to decline in December, down 0.1 percentage points to 4.2 percent.

The U.S. unemployment rate declined to 5.6 percent.

“Montana finished 2014 with more employment growth, which will likely put the year into the history books as one of the strongest years for our economy,” Gov. Steve Bullock said in a prepared release.

Montana’s total employment levels increased by 829 jobs over the last month, with 12,663 jobs added during 2014.

“Montana’s economy is continuing its momentum and promising a good year in 2015” said Labor Commissioner Pam Bucy. “Although we continue to monitor economic performance for any negative impacts from falling oil prices, employment growth in all other industries continues unabated.”

Lincoln County had the highest unemployment rate in the state during December at 11.5 percent. That county gained 233 jobs last year.

Sanders County ranked 55th with a jobless rate of 10.8 percent. The county lost six jobs in 2014.

Lake County had a 6.1 percent unemployment rate in December and gained 17 jobs for the year.
