Use caution when recreating in the backcountry

This is the monthly newsletter from the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office Recreation Safety Section.

With the current lack of snow, recent warm weather during the day and freezing temperatures at night, the snowmobile trails are icy in spots. Please use caution as you can suddenly encounter an icy patch which will affect the control you have over your snowmobile. Also, use caution when traveling off trail as the hazards that would normally be covered this time of year are exposed.

As another reminder, it is unlawful to drive a wheeled vehicle on designated snowmobile routes. Recently several people have ignored the signs and have driven on these routes. It is a misdemeanor offense and could also result in a hefty tow bill.

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office Recreation Safety Section is offering a free Boating Safety Course on Feb. 21. For information and to sign up contact Deputy Bob Bjelland at (208) 446-2250 or rbjelland@kcgov.us. You can also stop by our booth at the Spokane Boat Show through Feb. 8.

For any backcountry and marine related questions contact Deputy Jeff Burns at (208) 215-0221 or Jburns@kcgov.us.
