State quest starts for grapplers

Today’s high school wrestling action at Eureka, Glacier and Polson is all about two things.

Teams will be looking to qualify as many wrestlers as possible for the All-Class State Tournament Feb. 13-14 in Billings while individuals will be battling to pick up high seeds for better bracket placement at state.

The Western AA seeding tournament at Glacier begins at 11 a.m. for Glacier, Flathead, Helena Capital, Helena High and the three Missoula schools — Big Sky, Sentinel and Hellgate. The top eight individuals in all weight classes advance to state.

The Northwestern A division at Linderman Gymnasium in Polson also starts at 11 a.m. for Polson, Columbia Falls, Frenchtown, Libby and Whitefish. The top four in all weight classes advance to state.

And the Western B divisional in Eureka for Eureka, Arlee, Bigfork, Deer Lodge, Drummond/Granite, Florence/Carlton, Noxon, Plains/Hot Springs, Ronan, St. Ignatius, Superior and Thompson Falls starts at 10 a.m. Top four individuals in all weight classes qualify for state.

Western AA

Glacier’s Arik Lybeck, a senior, will be going for another divisional title this weekend.

Last year he finished first in Helena at 145 pounds.

This year he has moved up to 160, where he holds a 15-7 record.

Glacier’s two divisional runners-up are also back — Justin Gibson, a sophomore, at 103 and Cody Decker, a senior at 138.

Gibson wrestled at 98 last year with Decker at 126.

Gibson is currently 32-10 while Decker is 24-9.

Flathead had four third-place finishers at the divisional. Just one returns in Hunter Rush, a sophomore at 103.

Last year Rush wrestled at 98.

Flathead qualified 19 wrestlers for state in 2014 to 16 for Glacier.

“They are definitely excited,” Flathead coach Rich Vasquez said of his wrestlers.

“They have trained pretty hard.

“Just having two home duals (this season), they are excited to have another one (close to home).”

Flathead will field a very young lineup with nine freshmen and eight sophomores in the lineup.

“A lot of those kids have potential to get to state and make some noise,” Vasquez said.

“The future is looking good.”

Freshman Trae Vasquez (113) has the best record for the Braves at 31-2.

He also leads the team in pins (19), takedowns (78) and technical falls (3).

Freshman Payton Hume (132) is next at 24-14.

Hume leads the team in reversals (19).

Freshman Kenyon Fretwell (126) and senior Dyan Guzman (126) are 23-8 and 23-11, respectively.

Juniors Anthony Wright (160) and Logan Wilson (182) both check in at 22-10.

Glacier has another 30-match winner in senior Quinn Barber (152). He’s currently 31-9.

Gibson leads the Wolfpack in pins (21).

Ryder Day (125), a junior, has the most takedowns (46). Barber is second in takedowns (43) and pins (15).

“A successful weekend for me will be for everyone wrestling to their potential, wrestling hard,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers said.

“I want our veterans to finish their career and season strong and with a high seed.

“For the young kids, I want them to rise to the occasion, proving themselves,” he continued.

“They have put in the time and belong on the varsity mat.”

No team totals are kept at the seeding tournament, but second-ranked Sentinel should dominate.

“I think the West is doing better than last year,” Dankers said.

“It should be a good tournament.”

Northwestern A

Columbia Falls, ranked third in the latest Class A coaches poll, will be going for its third-straight divisional championship.

The Mat Cats had seven individual champions a year ago. Six are back, led by three-time state champion Shonn Roberts.

Other returning champs are sophomore Mason Fetters (120), junior Kaleb Gravelin (132), senior Haze Bell (126), senior Cody Walters (152) and senior Spencer Ross (285).

Roberts, a senior, is going for his fourth divisional title.

Last year he won it all at 126 with a 39-0 record. This year he has moved up to 138, where he is currently 32-2.

“We should be at full strength when we hit the mats on Saturday,” Columbia Falls coach Jessie Schaeffer said.

“The kids have had a great week of practice.”

Gravelin has matched Roberts for most wins this season with 32. He has lost five times.

Ben Windauer (113), a freshman, has the fourth most wins with his 22-6 mark. Bell is third, 25-7.

Columbia Falls has not lost a Northwestern A dual match the last two seasons.

Schaeffer, in his 10th season as head coach, picked up his 100th career dual win on Jan. 30 at the Whitefish Duals. The Mat Cats were 5-0 on the day with win No. 100 coming against Whitefish, 57-9.

“It was kind of fun, the kids were excited,” Schaeffer said. “They had the announcer announce it over the speaker. The kids went out of their way to make it a big thing for me. For me, it was just another day.”

Polson — juniors Tele Seeman (170) and Mike Corrigan (205) — Libby — seniors Zach Crace (152) and state champion Garret Chapel (170) — both had two individual divisional champs a year ago. All four are back.

Seeman is currently 25-9, Corrigan 28-7, Crace 13-1 and Chapel 12-1.

Freshman Cameron Brown (113) has the best record for Polson at 32-7. Teammate Parker Adler (120), a freshman, has posted at 20-13 mark.

“We’d like to push 12 kids to the state tournament,”

Polson coach Bob Owen said. “I’d be happy with that.”

Polson finished third at the divisional last year.

“They (Mat Cats) have a full lineup while we’re open at a few weights,” Owen said on the team front.

“He (Schaeffer) has some salty second stringers that he’s putting in.”

As a result, Owen said Columbia Falls is favored again.

Whitefish had two divisional runners-up last year and both are back.

Senior Matt Sampson (160) is 16-15 to date while junior Steven Quimby (285) is 31-10.

Western B

Eureka will not field a full squad, but the hosts have a tournament-type team with eight of its 10 wrestlers having won at least 20 matches.

Leading that group are defending divisional champions Zach Durden (120) and Garrett White (126). The two seniors are enjoying another banner season with Durden currently 35-3 while White is 24-3.

Freshman Garrett Graves (152) should pass the 30-win mark this weekend as he is currently 28-11.

Same goes for junior Josh Schmidt (145). He is 27-13.

Bigfork’s Vinny Quirk (205) finished second last year at the divisional for the best showing for the Vikings. The senior is 19-8 overall.

Eureka finished fourth at the divisional in 2014. The Lions will be a contender along with Ronan.
