FVCC scholarships
Five Flathead Valley Community College students have been named spring 2015 recipients of Community Pride Scholarships sponsored by the Whitefish Credit Union totaling $1,600. They include, Cindy Berger, of Columbia Falls, who is pursuing associate of applied science degrees in health care office management and medical coding, and Sara Gomes, of Hungry Horse, who is pursuing a business administration associate of applied science degree. This is the 20th year for the scholarships. Whitefish Credit Union has awarded $93,995 in scholarships to 277 FVCC students. For more information, contact the FVCC Financial Aid Office at 756-3849.

UM-Western dean’s list
Three students from Columbia Falls were named to the 2014 fall semester dean’s list at the University of Montana-Western in Dillon — Alexis Brunz, Stephanie Conway and Mitchell Wassam. To achieve this honor, students must be enrolled full-time or for 12 semester credits and carry a minimum 3.33 grade point average.
U-Great Falls dean’s list
Two local students with 4.0 grade point averages were named to the University of Great Falls’ President’s Honor Roll — Jessica Ream and Justin Whitman.
Army grad
Army Pvt. Harvey Barlow, a 2014 graduate of Columbia Falls High School, recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Benning, Ga. During the nine-week training period, Barlow received instruction in drill and ceremony, weapons, rifle marksmanship and bayonet training, chemical warfare, field training and tactical exercises, armed and unarmed combat, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness and first aid, along with Army history, traditions and core values. He is the son of Lana Leggett, of Columbia Falls.

Bill requires verification before issuing driver's licenses
A bill requiring the state to electronically verify that all foreign nationals are in the U.S. legally before issuing a Montana driver’s license or ID card was signed into law by Gov. Brian Schweitzer on April 18.
Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.
Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
