COEUR d'ALENE - A 21-year-old Coeur d'Alene man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for felony injury to a child.

Jeremiah D. Weaver will be eligible for parole in three years under the sentence given by First District Judge Fred Gibler.

Weaver was arrested last March in Post Falls and has been held at the Kootenai County jail on charges that he caused serious injuries to his son, who was 4 months old at the time.

Kootenai County Prosecutor Barry McHugh said he's pleased with the sentence.

"The court followed our recommendation," McHugh said. "While we always treat cases involving injury to innocent children very seriously, this case had some unanswered questions about what happened, which can happen when a child is injured when in the custody of a caregiver without any other witnesses to the events."

McHugh said the sentence provides assurance that Weaver will not be outside custody until he demonstrates an ability to follow the program deemed appropriate by the Bureau of Corrections at a level satisfactory to Judge Gibler.

After police and paramedics were called to a Post Falls home in the 1900 block of East Coeur d'Alene Avenue last March, the child was transported to Kootenai Health and then Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane due to head injuries.

Officers found the infant to be non-responsive, according to police reports. The child recovered at Sacred Heart after emergency surgery.

Weaver told police he found his child in the back bedroom unresponsive and not breathing.

Paramedics arrived moments later and, upon further medical examination, discovered possible bruising to the back of the child's head, according to police.

Weaver had been arrested three previous times as an adult, including for probation violation and obstructing and officer, both in 2013, and petit theft in 2014.
