MISSOULA — The swim seasons for Flathead and Glacier have been record setting and filled with plenty of best times.

That trend should continue for another weekend as both schools, along with Bigfork, Columbia Falls and Whitefish, head to Missoula for the season-ending Class AA and A-B State Swim Meet.

Action starts at 11 a.m. on Friday and Saturday at the University of Montana pool.

Qualifying will take place the first day. The event ends with consolation finals, places 7-12, and finals, 1-6, on Saturday.

“It’s been really exciting seeing huge improvements from the new swimmers and experienced swimmers,” Flathead/Glacier coach Dave Lillard said.

“Even the ones who swim year round are getting best times. That’s always a good sign. It means they are training harder and learning more technique.”

Glacier’s Nate Burnham has broken the 500 freestyle school (5:08.59) record twice.

The girls 200 freestyle relay team of Lauren Harmon, Jessica Loyda, Olivia Gibson and Emma Hornby own the Wolfpack record (1:47.09) in that event.

Flathead has qualified 10 girls and 11 boys. The numbers for Glacier are 12 girls and five boys.

“The biggest group I’ve ever taken (to state in my three years),” Lillard said.

“We set standards, our own qualifying times. We had a lot of people make it.”

Lillard says Burnham and James Bouda should “place in the top three of their events.”

He feels Jessica Loyda is a “top three” swimmer in the 50 freestyle.

Gibson is seeded sixth in the 500 freestyle and 100 butterfly, Hornby is 12th in 50 and 100 freestyle and Harmon is 13th in the 50 freestyle

Flathead has one swimmer seeded — Ethan Timm is 10th in the 100 breaststroke.

Colton Babcock (200 and 500 freestyle), Zayne Friar (100 backstroke and 100 butterfly), Jacob Hohman (50 and 100 freestyle), Hayden Pierce (100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke), Ashley Caffrey (50 and 100 freestyle) and Karyssa Nelson (100 freestyle and 100 back) have turned in some outstanding swims in the first prep season for Columbia Falls.

For Whitefish, Matthew Perez (500 freestyle and 100 backstroke), Jacob Anderson (100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle), Sarah Perez (200 IM and 100 breaststroke) and Sonja Ring (200 and 500 freestyle) have been impressive in their debut.

Columbia Falls has qualified seven for state and Whitefish 10.

“They have been great,” Columbia Falls/Whitefish coach Mike Nelson said.

“We’re hoping to bring home some type of (trophy) this weekend for both Columbia Falls and Whitefish.”

That would be a top three finish in the team standings.

Columbia Falls should pile up the points in both the 200 and 400 freestyle relay with Babcock, Friar, Hohman and Kaleb Bagley. That foursome has posted fast times at several meets.

The Class A-B field consists of six teams — Bigfork, Billings Central, Columbia Falls, Havre, Hardin and Whitefish.
