HARRISON FLATS - Charli Sadler was not going to be denied.
Sadler grabbed the rebound of a missed free throw with 6.2 seconds left, dribbled the length of the floor and scored a layup at the buzzer to left the No. 3 seed Mullan Tigers past the No. 2 Kootenai Warriors 50-49 in the first round of the 1A Division II District 1 girls basketball tournament Tuesday night at Kootenai High.
"I'm very proud of the team tonight," Mullan coach Sherry Leitz said. "Everyone stepped up and played her game. Great team play. They knew they had to play their best and they did what they needed to. Great positive attitudes with a 'no giving up' attitude. Great individual play, but better team play."
Sadler finished with 28 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and seven steals for Mullan (8-12), which advances to play top-seeded Lakeside (9-10) on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Kootenai for the district title and a berth to state next week at Nampa High.
Robbyn Trogden added 11 points and six boards for Mullan.
Kootenai, which beat Mullan three times in three previous meetings this season, finished 12-9.
Kaily Gentry made the first of two free throws with 6.2 seconds left to put Kootenai up 49-48. She missed the second, Sadler grabbed the rebound and went coast to coast for the win.
"Charli Sadler wanted to win this one. We did our darndest to stop Charli Sadler," Kootenai coach Mike LaFountaine said. "She would beat us off the dribble, we would try to have a couple girls to stop penetration, and that was opening up outside shots."
Katey Mae McInturff had 17 points and five steals for Kootenai, and Grace McInturff added seven points and 10 boards off the bench. Gentry finished with 11 points.
"We wanted a shot at returning to state (for the first time since 2013), but Mullan surprised us," LaFountaine said.
