It was a perfect night for Canadian cowboy Shay Marks.

The Sunnybrook, Alberta, bull rider was the only entrant in a field of 34 to pull off the daily double with scores in both sessions on Friday at the Professional Bull Riders Touring Pro Division Rocky Mountain Challenge at Majestic Valley Arena.

He had the fourth best ride in the opening go with an 83.5 score on Smooth Criminal.

Then in the final round, which featured the top 12 bull riders, he posted the best score, an 88.5 on a twisting bull called Helter Skelter.

His bull started to right out of the chute, suddenly switched back to the left and then back to the right again.

Marks countered the bull’s every move.

“I like them to go to the left, but that works,” Marks said.

“That makes it tough (of the changing pattern).”

On going 2 for 2 ...

“It’s great,” he said.

“It couldn’t have went better.”

The opening-round leader, Cawl Braithwaite of Bluffton, Alberta, was one of the final riders out in the last round. His ride was delayed by at least 15 minutes thanks to some drama in the chutes with his bull — Buck Wild — and the bull in the chute behind him.

Braithwaite had to dismount while another rider took his shot. Then when order was finally restored in the chutes and the slides were back in working order, it was Braithwaite’s time to shine.

“A lot of things go on and you try to block it out,” he said of dealing with the delay.

“It’s easier to get on and get out there.”

Braithwaite’s time on Buck Wild was short. He was bucked off quickly.

“I’d love to get on him tomorrow,” he said.

“I would do a few things different. He’s a bull you dream about getting on. He’s been to the world finals.”

Braithwaite was the third rider out in the opening session, notching 87.5 points on Devil’s West.

“He’s a really good bull,” Braithwaite said.

“He’ll throw you off, or if you ride him, you’ll win on him.”

Bull riding continues tonight at 7:30 with the final performance.
