BILLINGS — As one legacy came to an end, another trudged towards glory.

Shonn Roberts pursuit of four state wrestling championships came up short at the hands of Belgrade’s Jarret Degan in the Class A 138-pound championship match at the All-Class State wrestling tournament inside Rimrock Auto Arena at MetrPark on Saturday.

Degan, a junior, won his third mat title by pinning Roberts with 23 seconds left in the match and will have his chance at four titles in 2016.

After Haze Bell (126) and Kaleb Gravelin (132) of Columbia Falls lost their title matches, Roberts became the third Mat Cat to earn a second-place finish.

Bell was pinned by Gresh Jones of Sidney, who won his fourth consecutive title.

And Gravelin dropped a major decision to Grayson Brenna of Havre.

Roberts gave up a takedown in the first period and an escape in the second to fall behind 3-0 heading into the third. His third-period shot attempt was deep and nearly successful, but Degan countered and scored the takedown before earning the fall.

It was the second time this season Degan had defeated Roberts.

“It was pretty exciting to beat one of the elites in the state, Degan said.

“There’s not much else I can say expect I got it done.”

Columbia Falls’ Colton Gove (145) and Spencer Ross (285) wrestled back for third place.

It wasn’t all bad news for the Flathead Valley wrestlers in what appeared to be a tragic championship round.

Eureka’s Zach Durden (120) and Garrett White (126) lost their Class B-C title matches for second-place finishes, but Libby’s Garret Chapel became a two-time state title winner in dominating fashion, claiming his second title while barely breaking a sweat.

After cruising to the finals with two first-period pins and a 13-3 semifinal victory, Chapel tossed and pinned Sidney’s Cody Johnson just 48 seconds into the 170-pound title match.

“It feels great. It would have definitely been a big shock if I wouldn’t have won this one after winning last year,” he said.

“I expected nothing less coming into this than another championship.”

The smile continued to shine across the senior’s face, who will continue his wrestling career at the University of Great Falls next year.

Teammate Zach Crace was third at 152 for Libby.

Other local place winners were Polson’s Mateo Quinones (fifth at 103), Cameron Brown (fifth at 113) and Tele Seemann (sixth at 170).

Whitefish’s Judah Prestegaard was fifth at 160.
