POST FALLS - The memory of a beloved disc golfer, husband, father and friend will soar high Saturday during the Jared Massie Memorial Fundraiser Disc Golf Tournament in Corbin Park in Post Falls.

Massie was only 34 when he unexpectedly passed away in mid-December, leaving behind a daughter, twin sons, two stepsons, his wife, Tammy, and many loved ones.

"He was teaching his son how to play disc golf," said tournament director Jack Wardian of Post Falls.

Wardian is the owner of Rapid Fire Plastics Disc Golf Store, where he first met Massie as a customer about four or five years ago. Wardian became good friends with Massie and played with him frequently through the North Idaho Disc Golf Club, which is sponsoring the memorial event.

"I eventually talked him into becoming a member to support the disc golf club," said Wardian, who also serves as the club's treasurer. "He was always energetic and full of laughter, a unique individual. He liked to dress with the funny knitcaps with the tails on each side, it was kind of his trademark I guess."

Wardian said club members immediately wanted to do something to honor their friend and support his family after their tragic loss. Wardian's store even created custom discs decorated with photos of Massie that will be available at the event.

"This is a close-knit community," Wardian said. "Everybody has just very generous hearts and wanted to help out the family and we thought this would be a good way to do it."

Massie's many friends and fellow disc golfers will be playing one round of 18 holes with registration from 8-9:30 a.m. and tee-off at 10 a.m. Lunch will be provided and trophies and awards will be given to the top finishers in three divisions - pro, advanced and intermediate/recreational. All entry fees and raffle prizes will be donated to Tammy. Tournament costs and prizes have been paid by sponsors and friends.

"We are seeing an overwhelming amount of support from local players, and expect turnout to easily exceed our original estimate of 60 players," said co-tournament director Andy Oquendo of Coeur d'Alene."

Pre-registration is available at Rapid Fire Plastics, 2450 E. Seltice Way in Post Falls, until 7 p.m. Friday.
