COEUR d'ALENE - Feel like a celebrity as you walk the red carpet with photographers snapping your photo at the Oscars.
Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre is partnering with the Friends of the Bing for the second year to present Red Carpet Sunday, a live screening of the 87th annual Academy Awards, Sunday at the Bing Crosby Theater, 901 W. Sprague Ave., in Spokane. Doors open at 3 p.m. with the screening beginning at 4 p.m. Admission is free, but any food or beverage purchases will benefit the Friends Of the Bing and Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre. Donations will also be accepted at the door.
Attendees can view the screening from the Bing's 30-foot HD screen or from Ovations Lounge on the third floor where TVs will display the Oscars ceremony.
Jadd Davis, artistic director of Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre, will emcee the event. He said he will be singing and telling jokes to keep the audience entertained during parts of the broadcast that would otherwise be less entertaining.
Davis will perform songs from the 1940s to present day, along with live music and accompaniment on the Bing's Steinway piano from Jenny Shotwell, a fixture on the Seattle theater stage. Shotwell and guest singer Cody Bray, of Spokane, will also be singing with Davis. Bray has appeared in productions at Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre, Opera Coeur d'Alene and Spokane Civic Theatre.
"We want to keep the guests feeling like they are a part of the event and entertain the entire time they are there so they can feel like they are at a party," Davis said.
Throughout the screening, attendees can test their movie trivia and cast their vote on who is going to win each category, which they will then be entered into a drawing to win tickets to Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre productions, events at the Bing and a hotel package at the Hotel Ruby downtown Spokane.
Davis is rooting for "Into the Woods" to win an Oscar. He said most people who produce musicals would root for this movie.
"It's nice to see one of our art form be represented in film and also be well represented as well loved as it was," he said.
Last year many attendees arrived dressed in formal wear and some even dressed as their favorite movie character, said Laura Little, executive director of Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre.
"It's really fun to see everybody come in their finest attire or as their favorite celebrity. There are a lot of people that take that very seriously," Little said. "They really seem to enjoy that atmosphere. A lot of people love having an evening where they feel celebrity-esque themselves."
Davis said it's a really fun event. About 100 people attended last year.
"If you like the Oscars, it's a place to go experience them and have an event more fun than you'd have anywhere else," he said. "If you don't like the Oscars, it's still a great place to go and grab some live entertainment."
