NAMPA - After winning a state playoff game for the first time in 11 years on Friday, Lakeside has a shot at bringing home a trophy from the state 1A Division II girls basketball tournament.

The Knights (11-11) used clutch free-throw shooting and some deft defense to beat Council, 42-40, at Nampa High.

Lakeside advanced to play Nezperce (15-7), which hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to beat Tri-Valley, 30-27. The game for the consolation (fourth-place) title will be at 8:15 a.m. PST today at Nampa High.

The last time Lakeside won a state tournament game was on Feb. 18, 2004, a 50-38 victory over Clark County in Nampa.

"I was really happy with that," Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman said. "They got the first state win for Lakeside in quite a while. Hopefully we can go out and get that fourth-place trophy. Free throws late made a big difference."

With two minutes left, Talia Hendrickx made two free throws to give Lakeside a two-point lead. With 1:30 left, Lillian Rhea gave Lakeside a two-point lead by making 1 of 2 free throws.

Tea' Lambert was fouled on a fast break, and her free throw gave the Knights a 42-40 lead.

"We were able to play some defense and grabbed that last rebound to run the clock out," Dohrman said.

Rhea had seven rebounds, Cailyn Dohrman had nine points and six rebounds. Hendrickx had five assists and three steals. Rachael Arthur had six steals.

"We didn't play very well in the first half," Dohrman said. "We didn't play great defense. We played better defense in the second half."

Post Zoe Wessels scored 16 points for Council (20-4).
