The Wave fitness center in Whitefish is celebrating its 10th anniversary this Friday and Saturday with a full slate of events.

The Wave Board of Directors and employees will make a special toast to mark the occasion on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

“We feel privileged and honored to share with our community 10 years of success in our journey toward improving the health and well-being of so many,” said Wave director Art Krueger. “The support of our members, donors, local businesses and community at large has played a significant role in this endeavor.”

The Wave opened in February of 2005 after a 3 1/2 years effort between the city of Whitefish and the nonprofit group Whitefish Community Aquatic and Health Center.

The original 52,000-square-foot health-and-fitness facility cost $7.3 million to build. The city contributed $700,000 in seed money with fundrasing accounting for the remainder.

The Wave was deeded to the city with the agreement that it would be leased back to The Wave nonprofit organization for operation of the fitness center.

In 2007, the facility was expanded by 4,700 square feet to expand the weight room, cycling room and add an exercise room.

The second expansion in 2014 added 9,200 square-foot and included reorganization of the locker rooms, a larger daycare center, an additonal party room and another aerobic room.

There are about 4,600 members at The Wave.

The Wave’s 10th Anniversary celebration on Friday and Saturday includes a Wave Happy Hour from 5 to 6 p.m. with select wines from O’Brien’s Liquor and Wine along with complimentary food and beverages, prize giveaways, demo classes, and music from jazz group Blue Avenue. At 5:30 p.m. the Wave Board of Directors and employees will make a toast. Members and guests can also join gigantic Zumba class in the gymnasium. The Children’s Depot will keep the kids entertained with a children’s carnival including pizza, face painting, swimming and games.

On Saturday from 7 to 10 a.m. sample smoothies and juices from the juice bars. From 10 to 11:30 a.m. join in a huge yoga class. From noon to 1 p.m. the Wave features a “Heart Walk” to bring awareness to Heart Health. From 1 to 6 p.m. is an open swim.
