Chalk up another crosstown clash in favor of the Glacier Wolfpack.
Opening the game with a 14-2 run, the Wolfpack asserted dominance from the opening tip, defeating the Flathead Bravettes 64-40 in a Western AA home contest on Friday night.
The stands were packed with a rowdy crowd, but it didn’t seem to faze Glacier, who went 14 for 22 from the field in the opening half, shooting 59 percent for the game.
“Sometimes you get caught up in the atmosphere, but I challenged them. I said, ‘This is about you. Enjoy this and have fun.’ That first quarter was fun,” Glacier head coach Kris Salonen said.
Flathead didn’t help themselves either.
The Bravettes cut down on crucial turnovers, but couldn’t buy a bucket. Shooting 3 for 22 from the field in the first half, Flathead converted just one field goal in the second quarter.
Glacier led 36-11 at the break.
“Even though they got it across half court, we backed (our press) up a little bit and chose to pressure them a little bit more in the halfcourt,” Salonen said.
“We’re always going to hang our hats on our defense. Sometimes we struggle offensively and we can rely on our defense, but it’s nice to have both work for us tonight.”
Nine Glacier girls found their way into the scoring book with five finishing with seven or more. Hailee Bennett, who shot a perfect 4 for 4 from the free-throw line, had a game-high 15 points. Katie Wiley and Ali Williams each scored seven points. The Krueger sisters, Tessa and Nikki, finished with eight points each.
Glacier outrebounded Flathead 35-18. Taylor Salonen had a team-high seven boards for the Wolfpack.
Flathead could have rolled over and let the game get out of hand, but it chose to fight.
Despite dropping a 13th consecutive crosstown matchup, the Bravettes outscored Glacier 12-7 in the final period.
Flathead drained five of its six 3-pointers in the second half as the figurative lid was removed from the basket.
Tiana Johnson matched Bennett’s game-high with 15 points of her own, sinking three shots from behind the arc. Johnson pulled in four rebounds as did Janae Moon.
Taryn Gutierez proved to be a pesky post power for Flathead, netting eight points in the paint.
Glacier know holds a 14-3 advantage in the crosstown series.
