COEUR d'ALENE BOYS INN-VITATIONAL: Trojans get tripped up

COEUR d'ALENE - For nearly 32 minutes in the championship game of the Coeur d'Alene Inn-vitational Holiday Classic, the Post Falls Trojans hung tough with a team that finished fifth in last season's Washington state 3A boys basketball tournament, the Wilson Rams of Tacoma.
But two key 3-pointers within the last four minutes of the game by Wilson junior guard David Jenkins Jr., who has drawn interest from Washington State, Boise State and Montana, among others, made the difference as Post Falls suffered its first loss, 64-55.
With 31 seconds left and Wilson leading 62-55, Trojans backup guard Zach Hillman missed a corner 3-pointer that would have cut it to a two-possession lead. Wilson grabbed the rebound, Jenkins got fouled and he made two free throws with 21 seconds left to tie it.
"We got it to where we wanted it late in the game," Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. "We just had to get down and play defense. I thought they did a good job of causing us to turn the ball over in transition. I thought our half-court defense was very good against a team that athletic."
Jenkins scored eight of his game-high 28 points in the fourth quarter to seal the deal, six on two corner threes. The first came with less than four minutes left in the game, extending Wilson's lead to 54-47, and the second came with 1:58 left, which gave his team a 58-50 lead.
"Corners are the closest 3-point shot to the rim," Jenkins said. "So I just work on that a lot. I believe they were daggers. I believe when I hit them, (Post Falls) broke down a little bit."
Senior post Jack Millsap scored seven of his 11 points in the fourth quarter to give the Trojans (9-1) a fighting chance. With 4:44 left, his inside basket cut the Rams' lead to 51-47, then with less than three minutes left, his 3-pointer cut it to 54-50.
"I started to go inside more often, like I should have," Millsap said. "We're looking good."
Hillman scored a team-high 13 points for Post Falls.
"We had the right plays and my teammates helped us get open looks," Hillman said.
After Wilson (9-1) took a 42-31 halftime lead, Post Falls countered Wilson layup for layup, three for three, steals of its trap. But quick layups by Wilson and threes by Keon Palu-Thompson, who scored 17 points, and Jenkins kept the Trojans at bay at times in the second half.
"In the first half they did such a greate job of swinging the ball," Wilson coach Dave Alwert said. "They made the extra pass and we were lucky they didn't knock down their open threes. But they hit them in that second half. We did a good job of staying in our gaps and we made their passes tougher. They're a tough team. They ate us up on the glass, their guards handled our pressure well. There's a reason why they're one of the top teams (in Idaho)."
Post Falls plays today against Eagle, in the Centennial New Year's Invitational at the CenturyLink Arena in Boise.
Post Falls senior post Jake Blakney had eight rebounds, Luke Anderson six rebounds and Dalton Thompson had five.
Wilson guard Dom Hammond, who was named the tournament MVP after the game, was held to two points. Coeur d'Alene High's Colby Daniels joined Jenkins and Palu-Thompson on the all-tournament team.

Coeur d'Alene 77, Lapwai 64: The Vikings were certainly tested by the 1A Wildcats in the third-place game, trailing 45-44 after the third quarter.
But Coeur d'Alene (7-3) scored 33 points in the fourth quarter to pull away.
"I'm impressed with how hard they play and how well-coached they are," Vikings coach Kurt Lundblad said. "They showed up to play and we knew we'd have our hands full. They're a really good team and we didn't take them lightly. Those guys can play."
Coeur d'Alene was paced by Tony Naccarato, who scored 22 points and Colby Daniels, who had 20.
"Throughout the tournament our decision-making hasn't been real solid," Lundblad said. "We didn't play real well three games in a row. We'll learn from this and get better."
