COEUR d'ALENE - Who says you can't have a little fire in a Holiday tournament?
Senior Clarissa Smith scored 11 points - all coming in the first half - to lead the Lake City Timberwolves past the Coeur d'Alene Vikings 49-28 in the third-place game of the inaugural Coeur d'Alene Winter Classic tournament on Wednesday at Elmer Jordan Court.
The win marks Lake City's first over Coeur d'Alene since 2011, when the Timbewolves beat the Vikings in the 5A Region 1 tournament in Lewiston.
"It's been a long time since we've beaten Coeur d'Alene," Lake City coach Bryan Kelly said. "There's some seniors on this team that have never beaten Coeur d'Alene in this gym, so there was a little fire to them."
Lake City 49, Coeur d'Alene 28 (third place game): Lake City held Coeur d'Alene to 9 of 30 shooting from the field, with the Timberwolves going 20 for 52.
"We just need to keep getting better and know there's more important games to be played down the road," Kelly said. "It's a good step in the right direction."
As it so happens, Lake City (10-1) travels to Coeur d'Alene (8-5) in an Inland Empire League game on Tuesday.
Madisen Scholwinski had eight points and five blocked shots for Coeur d'Alene, which was held without a field goal in the second quarter.
"In the second quarter, we didn't score much and when Emily (Callahan) got into foul trouble, we put some other kids in there, and they didn't do it," Coeur d'Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. "All in all, there's a glimmer of hope and if we keep working at it, we might be able to get them before it's over."
Whitney Meier scored 12 points, all on 3-point field goals, for Lake City.

Post Falls 56, Lapwai 50 (consolation championship): Trojan senior guard Shayna Allert scored 12 points and hit key free throws down the stretch to push Post Falls past Lapwai.
"We just had to calm down," Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. "Lapwai really sped us up and we were playing way too fast in the first half and got out of control. Give credit to them, they did a great job of taking us out of what we wanted to do."
Post Falls (11-3) outscored Lapwai 31-25 in the second half to finish the tournament 2-1.
"We knew coming into the game that it was going to be an up and down game," coach Allert said. "Our second group coming off the bench did a great job of slowing the game down and the starters kind of finished it."
Melody Kempton scored 15 points for Post Falls (11-3), which hosts Moses Lake on Tuesday at The Arena.
