COEUR d'ALENE - Kelly Stafford sat snug in a Coeur d'Alene apartment around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, watching a movie with two friends, when a stranger opened the door.

The man, approximately in his 50s, took a good look inside before they shoved the door closed and locked it at Falls Creek Apartments on the 2800 block of North Julia Street in Coeur d'Alene.

Quickly, the man began beating on the door and eventually kicked his way inside the apartment and started yelling at Stafford, 22, and her two friends, a female, 19, and a male in his mid-20s.

"He came into the apartment very aggressively, telling us this is not our apartment," Stafford said. "He kept saying this was his apartment."

It wasn't - it was actually leased by one of Stafford's friends, and she stays there regularly.

The stranger made comments about his "old lady" not liking Stafford's male friend.

Police soon arrived and the man, identified as Brian C. Thacker, 52, of Coeur d'Alene, was arrested and booked into Kootenai County jail.

"I had to call out of work today," Stafford said Monday. "I couldn't sleep ... it's traumatic, really."

She said her friends were left feeling the same way. The door to the apartment is completely broken.

"I don't think they knew each other at all," Sgt. Christie Wood said Monday.

She said Thacker was booked on an anticipated charge of assault.

An investigation by police indicated Thacker was likely drinking at the nearby Silver Fox bar, she said, when he got into a verbal altercation.

"He went to have a confrontation with this other man" from the bar when he barged into Stafford's apartment, Wood said.

"He basically kicked in the wrong door," Wood said.

He appeared to be under the influence of something, Wood said. Stafford said the man didn't appear drunk.

"His statements (to police) didn't make any sense," Wood said.

In addition to being booked on assault, he was cited for malicious injury to property and unlawful entry.
