HAYDEN LAKE - The names of the two victims who were trapped under a vehicle door on an embankment over the weekend were released on Monday.

Penni Mahieu, 79, Hayden, was in fair condition at Kootenai Health on Monday night after suffering chest injuries.

Brady Foil, 17, Hayden, who works for Mahieu, was treated and released from the hospital after Saturday afternoon's accident in the 2300 block of East Hayden Lake Road east of Hayden.

According to the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office, it appears Mahieu was parking her 2000 Ford Excursion in her driveway when she left it in drive, but did set the emergency break and shut the vehicle off.

"As she was exiting the driver's door, the vehicle rolled back and then started to slide," said KCSO Lt. Stu Miller. "She was behind the door as it was rolling or sliding backward."

Foil saw the accident unfolding and was on the opposite side of the driver's door attempting to stop the vehicle's momentum, Miller said.

"The vehicle then continued to the opposite side of the road and started down the embankment," Miller said. "Penni fell down, with her chest pinned under the door and her head on the downhill side. Brady also slid under the door and was pinned on his legs. However, he was able to free himself."

The vehicle then struck a tree, stopping it from going down any farther, Miller said.

Miller said Mahieu was trapped for at least 30 minutes. A passerby saw the crashed vehicle and called 911.

Mahieu needed to be extricated from the crash by the Northern Lakes Fire District.
