Degrees from disaster

SANDPOINT - A pair of Schweitzer Mountain Resort visitors narrowly escaped a dangerous rollover crash on Monday afternoon.
A Subaru Outback went off the side of Schweitzer Mountain Road and stopped balanced precariously on its passenger side. Had its resting angle been a few degrees greater, Schweitzer Fire/Rescue District Chief Spencer Newton said the vehicle would have rolled.
"It would have rolled at least three or four times before coming to a stop," Newton said.
Newton said a passerby gave the male and female in the car good advice to stay put until help arrived. Crawling from the car could have caused it to roll and placed them in danger of being crushed.
Schweitzer Fire/Rescue personnel lashed heavy duty nylon webbing to the Subaru's undercarriage and attached it to the district's fire truck.
"They stayed belted in and then we secured it when we showed up. Then we helped them out. Everybody was fine," Newton said.
The crash happened shortly after 1 p.m. on switchback seven, which is known for the expansive view of Lake Pend Oreille it provides. The car was descending the road when it slid.
"From my understanding, they just came into it too hot and then when they got to the side of the road where all the gravel and ice is they couldn't stop," Newton said.
