Sewer repairs start in Kellogg

The 700 block of Cameron Avenue in Kellogg has been closed for an emergency sewer project.
Craig Lewis, Kellogg superintendent of public works, said he estimates the project will take about three days, but he can't know for sure until the extent of the damage is known. He said the city is currently unsure about what caused the sewer pipe to collapse, but he figures it is most likely just due to age.
"I don't know how old that line is," Lewis said. "When they built the new hospital they replaced everything in their parking lot, but from one side of town to the other is all the old pipe."
Lewis said another possibility for the collapse could be a ground shift. He said at this point they just aren't sure.
The call was made Tuesday and was immediately looked into, Lewis said. He said there are no buildings or residences without service at this point.
Lewis said this is a perfect example of why the recent sewer bond needed to pass. He said without the bond this kind of an emergency would be a regular occurrence in Shoshone County, ultimately costing a significantly higher amount of money.
A press release from the City of Kellogg states Cameron Avenue will be closed from Subway west to the Bunker Avenue intersection. It said the businesses that will be affected include Subway, Sam's Restaurant, the Silver Horn Motor Inn and J. Jack Rose, Attorney-At-Law. These businesses will still be open and accessible, just not directly from Interstate Exit 49.
