SANDPOINT - Contractors set about the touchy business of installing a prefabricated concrete restroom building for the International Selkirk Loop Interpretive Center on Thursday morning.

The structure, delivered to its new home located on East Superior Street in Sandpoint, was set on a gravel pad that had been protected from freezing since fall. Its arrival was delayed due to weather, according to prime contractor Brian Bailey, owner of BB Bailey Construction Co.

"We had to push back delivery for a couple of weeks - we had 16 inches of snow," Bailey said.

Bailey and his crew will soon begin connecting utilities, pouring concrete sidewalks and other site work and finishing touches that will eventually greet visitors, weather permitting, according to Bruce Robertson of the city of Sandpoint.

The center will eventually boast a log trellis, interpretive signs and artwork. It should see plenty of use during events such as the Long Bridge Swim during the summer, Robertson said.

Work preparing for the building has been ongoing for months as underground utilities were installed and curved concrete walls constructed. Art will eventually grace the walls and the general area of the center. The interpretive center will also include information such as local history, geology, wildlife and other facts about the International Selkirk Loop.

A grant from the Idaho Transportation Department, and some matching funds from the city of Sandpoint funded the project. It's scheduled for completion this spring, Robertson said.
