MISSOULA, Mont. - Post Falls High graduate Tyler Booth's come-from-behind pin at 149 pounds helped North Idaho College, ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA, beat the University of Great Falls, rated No. 3 in the NAIA, 24-18 on Saturday at Sentinel High.

"It was a good match for us," Pat Whitcomb said. "Great Falls is a tough team ... It was a great crowd. We had some guys out, but our backups came out and did a good job. We won six matches and they won four. Tyler Booth was behind in the match, then he got a lift on the guy from behind and put him on his back and held him there for the fall. At 165, Kip Major got a big pin for us and he threw his opponent on his back and picked up the momentum."

North Idaho College (9-2) travels to Highline College of Des Moines, Wash., on Thursday.

125 - Michael Nguyen, NIC, d. Schlosser 8-4. 133 - Clinton Garvin, UGF, p. Will Bardezbain, 2:42. 141 - Kyle Wilson, UGF, d. Bryce Weatherston, 9-3. 149 - Tyler Booth, NIC, p. Ryan Martin, 5:12. 157 - Chad Cebulski, UGF, d. Tyler McLean 4-3. 165 - Kit Major, NIC, p. Billy GoForth, 1:29. 174 - Shawn Lau, UGF, p. Timothy Parten, 1:27. 184 - Cruz Del Angel, NIC, d. Taylor Vaughn 7-5. 197 - Johnathen Dennis, NIC, d. Andreas Geranios, 5-1. 285 - Taylor Kornoely, NIC, d. Dylan Lemery, 8-5.

MEN: After NIC had closed to within 74-69, Shaq Carr hit a pull-up jumper with 2:21 remaining for CSI (21-0, 6-0 SWAC), which finished 28 of 57 from the floor.

"I really love this group we've got," Phay said. "They play hard, and that's why we're 21-0 right now. It's kind of special to know that your team has your back and they know how special it (Phay's return to NIC) was to me."

Phay was 221-94 in 10 seasons at NIC before leaving for CSI in May. He was replaced by his longtime assistant, Corey Symons.

"NIC has so much talent and Corey's doing a great job this season," Phay said. "And I'm really proud of him. It's tough to play him, because I want him to win. NIC is going to keep getting better and better, and tough down the stretch. We've won six conference games, and five of them have been on the road, so I'm really impressed with this group.

NIC (14-5, 2-4) was held to 21-of-61 shooting, but made 24 of 30 free throws to stay close throughout.

"With CSI, it's always a great rivalry," NIC coach Corey Symons said. "And it makes it a little tougher with Phay down there now. It was a great turnout tonight, and I'm happy with the guys. They executed our game plan and did what we wanted them to do, but just couldn't put the ball in the hole. And they (CSI) shot better than they normally do."

Braian Angola-Rodas scored 19 points for NIC, leading four players in double figures.

"Throughout the game, we had a feeling like we had it," said Angola-Rodas, a 6-foot-6 freshman guard from Villanueva, Columbia. "And then the ball started to bounce their way, so it was bad for us, but we'll continue to get better. We need to play more aggressive toward the basket and bounce back for the next game."

Jordan King scored 15 points, Djuan Piper added 12 and Jamaal Robateau scored 10 for NIC.

"I told the guys you want to be peaking when it comes to regional tournament time," Symons said. "And we're playing well right now, but need to take a couple of steps forward to get back on track. They're a tough team and everything they're talked up to be. We were in the game, but shots didn't fall our way. We'll get back to work and fix a few things and get back to work Thursday."

WOMEN: After battling back and forth throughout the first half, NIC blew the game open by closing the first half on a 15-5 run, then used a 12-2 run at the start of the second half to pull away.

"The one thing they've learned this season is they've got to keep it going for a full 40 minutes," NIC coach Chris Carlson said. "They just can't rest on a four-point lead, and we did exactly that."

It was NIC's (16-6, 3-3) largest margin of victory (39 points) this season in the team's third home game since Dec. 6. NIC lost 87-77 at CSI in December.

"They just kept on going," Carlson said. "They just kept pushing on the gas pedal and didn't let up. It was great to be back home. We had that huge win at Snow in overtime, and it was good to have a little momentum coming back."

Not even a cold could slow down Landdeck, who also had four rebounds and two steals for NIC.

"We played so well tonight and just worked as a team," said Landdeck, a 5-8 freshman guard from Issaquah, Wash. "Everything just came to me, and I didn't have to force anything. We were just finding a way to get open shots and didn't want to let them back in the game."

For CSI (12-9, 3-3), it was the Golden Eagles' second straight loss by more than 30 points. CSI fell at Salt Lake 85-59 last Saturday.

"I thought we came out with some energy early," CSI coach Randy Rogers said. "We wanted to defend the perimeter early and keep (NIC guard Kara) Staggs from scoring, and we knew we had to stop her. NIC is more than one dimensional for sure and had some kids step up and make some shots."

Mariah Swanson scored 17 points, Panisesi Taimani 12 and Maci Benedict 11 for NIC.

"Monica played phenomenal," Carlson said. "Kara had a huge game against CSI in the first go-around, and we knew they'd clamp down on her and it opened some lanes for Monica to step up. And Mariah was able to have a big game too."

Samantha Lubcke scored 21 points for CSI.
