Kirby guides Timberlake in Buck romp
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 10 years, 3 months AGO
SPIRIT LAKE - Allison Kirby led four players in double figures for the Timberlake Tigers, who romped past the Priest River Spartans 66-29 in the Battle for the Buck spirit game on Saturday.
Timberlake is the top-ranked team in this week's state 3A girls basketball media poll, with Priest River third.
"Our defense led to some easier shots which started falling in the second quarter and our defense kind of created our offense," Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. "It was a total team effort on both ends of the floor, and the girls played great both offensively and defensively."
Keelie Lawler scored 12 points, Payten Rhodes 11 and Jacquelyn Mallet 10 for Timberlake (13-2, 3-0 Intermountain League), which hosts Lakeland on Thursday.
Elisa Williams scored seven points for Priest River (12-3, 2-1).

Sandpoint 38
Moscow 33
SANDPOINT - Sandpoint struggled mightily to score the basketball for three quarters in a 4A Inland Empire League showdown with Moscow on Saturday night at Les Rogers Court.
But a sparkling fourth quarter erased all of that, as the Bulldogs came from 14 points down in the second half deficit to beat the Bears and take the early edge for the No. 1 seed at districts.
Madi Schoening scored 17 points and nabbed eight steals to lead the Bulldogs (10-6, 2-0 4A IEL), who trailed 20-8 after a rough first half.
"We couldn't buy a basket in the first half," Sandpoint coach Duane Ward said. "In the second half we extended the defense, then we started getting some steals. Moscow got a little shook up and we got confidence."
Lily Martin added six rebounds and three steals and Elani Williams seven points and four boards in the win. Perhaps the biggest shot of the game came from Riley Couch, who drained a 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter to cut the lead to four, and it was all Sandpoint from that point.
Jada Simpson led Moscow (5-9, 1-1) with 12 points.
Sandpoint is at Lewiston on Monday.

"We put a lot of focus on our transition game," Coeur d'Alene Charter coach Doug Grant said. "We've been beaten on it and most of Anna's points came in transition. They focused a lot of their attention on our posts, Jacklyn Jensen and Sarah Haman, double-teamed them. That allowed others to step up."
Jordan Howell scored nine points for Orofino (3-11, 0-4 CIL).

We didn't make our free throws as much as we would've liked to in order to close out the game. Katey Mae did a good job defending for us."
