Lakeland honors Tuinstra in winning own tourney
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 10 years, 11 months AGO
RATHDRUM - The Lakeland Hawks honored the late Van Tuinstra the best way they could.
The Hawks had four individual champions and edged Freeman (Wash.) for the team title to capture the inaugural 10-team Tuinstra Memorial Classic on Saturday at Lakeland High.
William Edelblute (98 pounds), Larry Johnson (113), Jared Walker (170) and Conor Shepherd (220) won titles for Lakeland.
Tuinstra was a former assistant wrestling coach at Lakeland, and also served as vice principal and athletic director before going to Timberlake as AD when that school opened in 1998.
While assisting wrestling coach Jim Whiteman at Lakeland, Tuinstra was instrumental in starting the Lakeland Classic, a prestigious tournament back in the 1980s. Current Lakeland wrestling coach Rob Edelblute competed for Whiteman and Tuinstra at Lakeland in the late 1980s, when the Hawks won back-to-back Tri-State titles.
"It was only fitting," Edelblute said of Lakeland winning the Tuinstra tournament. "I think Van would have been proud of it. He dedicated a lot of time to wrestling at Lakeland. It (the tourney) was a way to honor his name. Hopefully we can carry it on, and it (the tourney) can get bigger and bigger."
Other local champions included Tucker Figueroa of Kellogg (126), Jason Burchell of Post Falls (132), Blake Ivie of Kellogg (138), and Tyler Badertscher of Timberlake (152).
Sebastian Hyta of Freeman, who won the 195-pound class, was named the tourney's Outstanding Wrestler.
