ROYAL CITY - Royal High wrestling coach Randy Miller used invitational tournaments at Castle Rock and Riverside last weekend to prepare for the dual meet season, which start tonight.
The Knights will square off with always tough Warden at Warden tonight. They will travel to Connell on Thursday.
Saturday they will host several schools at their own Royal Rumble.
"The purpose to splitting the team last week was to get everyone some quality matches and develop some confidence in our younger wrestlers before we start league this week," coach Miller said.
Eight Knights went to Castle Rock. There were three champions, and the rest of them placed. The results follow:
- Eduardo Rodriquez - 106 Champion
- Kiki Chabolla - 120 Runner Up
- Steven Toro - 126 3rd Place
- Carlos Hernandez - 132 Champion
- Elias Cardenas - 138 Runner Up
- Darrin Miller - 170 Champion
- Hunter Follett - 195 5th Place
- Miguel Ayala - 220 Runner Up
Royal finished third among the 20 schools entered, scoring 162.5 points.
At Riverside, the team took fifth place and had some impressive individual performances. CJ Quintero (freshman) took third at 160, Adrian Trinidad (sophomore) second at 182, Eduardo Acevedo (sophomore) fourth, Angel Rojas (junior) second at 285.
"For us to win a league, district and regional title this season, it will take all hands on deck," coach Miller said. "Every point will count. Since our numbers are good we need to utilize every opportunity when we step on the mat."
