MATTAWA - The retiring U.S. Marshall who Mattawa Police Chief John Turley believed was going to fill the open police officer position in Mattawa has changed his mind.

Turley said Friday it appears the pay in Mattawa is not enough to be worth the move to Bob Doty of Spokane. Doty was in line take over the position Thomas Williams vacated when he moved to a police position in another community.

Turley went to his civil service tested list and offered the job to Moses Lake Reserve Officer Tyler St. Onge, No. 2 on the list. St. Onge recently started serving full time in the same position while Turley waited for Doty to arrive.

St. Onge turned down the offer but will remain in the position temporarily until Turley finds a replacement. Turley will offer the post to the No. 3 applicant, also a Moses Lake resident.

If that doesn't work out, Turley will have to start the civil service process again.
