Alfred J. 'Smitty' Hise, 86

Alfred J. "Smitty" Hise passed away peacefully on Jan. 15, 2015, after a short illness. He was 86.

Al was born to Mary and Claude Hise on Sept. 7, 1928, in Deadwood, S.D. He was the youngest of 13 children.

In 1948, Al joined the Navy serving on the U.S.S. Sierra during the Korean War, where he was a Boiler Technician Second Class. After the leaving the Navy in 1952 he returned to Osburn, Idaho, where he met and married the love of his life, Violet Mae. They recently celebrated their 62nd anniversary.

To support his family, Al worked for Bunker Hill as a pipefitter for 30 years. While there he became a Certified Steam Engineer. After retiring from Bunker Hill he worked for Shoshone Living Center as the maintenance supervisor and described his time there as "the best job" he ever had.

In 1991, Al and Vi moved to Coeur d'Alene. Their final move there was to Bestland where they made many wonderful friends.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, all of his brothers and sisters, and his beloved son, Kevin Hise.

He is survived by his wife, Violet Hise; daughter Margaret Hise Koelsch (Eric), daughter-in-law Jolene Sigmond (Mitch); grandchildren: Amber Hise, Chrysa Malone (Greg), Mark Sullivan, Kevin Koelsch, Joe Koelsch, and Sara Koelsch; great-granddaughter Charlotte Malone; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Al loved to dance, garden, and was an avid Seahawks and GU fan. He had a wicked sense of humor which he maintained to the end. He was a loyal and generous friend, and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

There will be a viewing from 5-7 p.m. on Friday Jan. 23, at Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene Chapel. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church (5th and Wallace) in Coeur d'Alene. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Shoshone Memorial Gardens in Pinehurst, Idaho.
