baseball tryouts set Sunday

COEUR d'ALENE - Tryouts for Coeur d'Alene's American Legion baseball teams are scheduled for Sunday at the Lake City High hitting facility.

Tryouts for grades 8-9 are slated for 5 to 6:30 p.m.; and tryouts for grades 10 and up are set for 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Few helping raise money

for cancer awareness

SPOKANE - The first round of online voting in the Infinity Coaches' Charity Challenge ends Sunday.

Gonzaga men's basketball coach Mark Few is one of 48 NCAA basketball coaches competing for their designated charity.

All of Few's winning proceeds will benefit the Community Cancer Fund.

Fans can vote for Few by visiting www.VoteCoachFew.com.

Half of the coaches advance to the second round, held between Jan. 26 and Feb. 15. From Feb. 16 to March 1, 16 coaches will advance to the third round, and four will advance to the final round from March 2-15.

Advancing to Round 2 alone would mean $7,500 for the Community Cancer Fund. The CCF is guaranteed a mininum of $1,000 with Few joining in the competition.

Cd'A Rec Department taking men's league registrations

The Coeur d'Alene Recreation Department is currently taking team registration for the men's spring basketball league, beginning the week of March 2.

Games are held on weekdays and two leagues are offered. Team entry fee is $395. Entry deadline is Feb. 13. Teams will play a seven game schedule, and must be 16 years of age to participate.

Manito pro Prugh named to

Pacific Northwest PGA Hall

TUMWATER, Wash. - Steve Prugh, PGA head professional at Manito Golf and Country Club in Spokane, and Pat Huffer, PGA head professional at Crooked River Ranch and have been honored as the 51st and 52nd members of the Pacific Northwest Section PGA Hall of Fame.

Founded in 1981, the Pacific Northwest Section PGA Hall of Fame recognizes those individuals who have distinguished themselves among the professionals in the Pacific Northwest and contributed to the game of golf.

Prugh has served his entire 36-year career at Manito Golf and Country Club in Spokane. Prugh's first three years were under the mentorship of Pacific Northwest Section Hall of Fame member Jim Shriver and the last 33 years as PGA Head Professional. Prugh has been honored by the Pacific Northwest Section as Teacher of the Year, Junior Golf Leader and Golf Professional of the Year.

Prugh played for the University of Oregon before turning professional. He has played on four Hudson Cup teams, five senior Hudson Cup teams, played in the 2006 U.S. Senior Open, and has competed in five PGA Professional National Championships.

A long serving member of the board of directors, Prugh served as Pacific Northwest Section president from 2011-2012. Junior golf is a passion for Prugh, as witnessed by his 23 years of service as a district director for the Washington Junior Golf Association and a strong junior program at Manito.

Prugh's wife, Susan, serves as a USGA rules official, daughter Hillary plays golf at Montana State, son Corey is a PGA teaching pro at Manito and son Alex is a PGA Tour player.

Steve Prugh won the 1972 Washington state high school golf championship while at Ferris High, with Corey (1999) and Alex (2003) accomplishing the same feat.

Huffer has been the PGA head pro at Crooked River Ranch in central Oregon since 2006. Prior to his move to central Oregon, Huffer was a fixture for 25 years in Roseburg, Ore., first at Roseburg Country Club and at Stewart Park Golf Course. In addition to Huffer's service to his golfers, he has consistently served his community and fellow PGA professionals. Huffer spent over 20 years in the governance of the Pacific Northwest Section and Oregon Chapter, serving on the board of directors and culminating as President of the Pacific Northwest Section in 2007 and 2008.

Huffer is a graduate of Lake Chelan High and the University of Washington, playing on the golf team at both schools.

Both will be formally inducted on April 24 at Inglewood Country Club in Kenmore, Wash., in a joint celebration between the Pacific Northwest Section PGA and the Pacific Northwest Golf Association.
