SANDPOINT — Warning: there may be an unseen, sinister intruder hiding in your home.

The good news is there’s an easy way to find and eradicate it. That killer is radon — a naturally occurring, colorless, odorless radioactive gas — and the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers in the U.S.

“It’s a long-term health issue,” according Jim Faust, indoor environment program manager for the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.

To paint a better picture of the extent of radon contamination in Bonner County, Health and Welfare is asking Bonner County residents to test their homes, then send the results to one of five U.S. testing labs for analysis.
