PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Sparks sparks Vikings past Lewiston boys

COEUR d'ALENE - Elliott Sparks had 12 points and five assists for the Coeur d'Alene Vikings in a 49-34 win over the Lewiston Bengals in a 5A Inland Empire League game on Friday at Elmer Jordan Court.

"Elliott has been a spark for us all year long," Coeur d'Alene coach Kurt Lundblad said. "He does everything we ask of him on both sides of the ball. He was super again tonight. We ask and get a lot out of him, and he does it every night."

Tony Naccarato had 11 points and seven rebounds for Coeur d'Alene (10-5, 2-2 5A IEL), which hosts Lakeland on Tuesday.

Michael Murphy scored 11 points for Lewiston (7-9, 0-2), which hosts Post Falls today. The Bengals were held to 13 points in the first half.

"Our defense was super for the most part for 32 minutes," Lundblad said. "Defensively, the kids were super tonight."

SPIRIT LAKE - Gus Colburn scored 11 points and Heath Waechter added 10 for the Wildcats in an Intermountain League victory over the Tigers.

"Kellogg's got a good, solid team," Timberlake coach Tony Hanna said. "Unfortunately we shot 19 percent from the field and 38 percent from the free-throw line. I was pleased with the way we played defense. Gus is quick, he's hard to get a hold of and Waechter has good size inside."

Timberlake (2-11, 1-2 IML) hosts Moscow today.

Kellogg (10-3, 3-0) hosts Wallace on Tuesday.

COEUR d'ALENE - Madisen Scholwinkski scored seven points for the Vikings in a 5A Inland Empire League loss to the Bengals at Elmer Jordan Court.

With the win, Lewiston (17-1, 4-0 5A IEL) clinched at least a tie for the league championship, and can win it outright by beating visiting Post Falls today at Booth Hall. Coeur d'Alene (9-9, 0-5) will be the No. 4 seed to the 5A Region 1 tournament starting Feb. 6.

"We started out in a hole, but had (the deficit) down to eight points in the first half," Coeur d'Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. "We didn't do too bad in the third quarter, but forgot to score in the fourth quarter. We didn't play too bad, but Lewiston played well."

Lynzee Wilson scored 17 points for Lewiston, which is ranked second in this week's state 5A girls basketball media poll.

Isabella Hollibaugh had seven rebounds for Coeur d'Alene (9-9, 0-5), which travels to Sandpoint on Tuesday.

SPIRIT LAKE - Keelie Lawler scored 15 points to lead the Tigers, the top-ranked team in this week's state 3A girls media basketball poll, past the Wildcats, ranked fourth, in an Intermountain League game.

"Keelie had a really good night and shot the ball really well," Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. "As a team, we didn't have a great shooting night, but our defense was a big deal for us to hold them to 13 points in the first half. We had really good balance, but had to rely a little more on our defense to get the win."

Allison Kirby scored eight points for Timberlake (15-2, 4-0 IML), which travels to Priest River on Tuesday.

Andee Wendt scored 12 points and Hailey Zisk added nine for Kellogg (10-5, 1-3), which travels to Bonners Ferry on Tuesday.

ST. MARIES - Kaylee Auer scored 16 points and Kari Ghramm hit a 3-pointer that put the Lumberjacks ahead by five points with nearly two minutes left in overtime, as St. Maries won a key Central Idaho League game against the Panthers.

"We had a full-court press on and caused a couple of turnovers and capitalized on it," St. Maries coach Jay Sines said.

Kaylee Auer hit a midrange jumper to put the Lumberjacks (6-9, 3-2 CIL) ahead by seven in OT.

"We fought really hard in the fourth quarter and started hitting some shots," Sines said.

Kelsey Auer had 13 rebounds and five assists, four steals and four blocks, Kaylee Auer had 13 rebounds, eight steals and three blocks for St. Maries, which hosts Bonners Ferry today.

Jacklyn Jensen scored 13 points and Anna Verhaeghe added 12 points for Coeur d'Alene Charter (8-7, 1-2), which travels to Mullan on Tuesday.
