LEGION BASEBALL: Lums, league-leading Twins split

COEUR d'ALENE - Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen left-handed pitcher Dominic Conigliaro didn't feel 100 percent before the first game of a class AA American Legion baseball doubleheader against the Lewis-Clark Twins on Tuesday.
But he threw a complete game and led Coeur d'Alene to a 2-1 win over Lewis-Clark. The league-leading Twins (14-13, 5-1 North Idaho League) shut out the Lumbermen (23-7, 7-3) in the second game 3-0.
"Before the game I definitely had a headache and I wasn't feeling too great, but once I got on the mound I kind of got in the zone and forgot about that and started feeling better," said Conigliaro, who struck out three and scattered seven hits.
Conigliaro said he might have been a little dehydrated from playing in Hoopfest over the weekend, which could have been part of the reason for the headache, but he said once he started pitching, it wasn't a big issue.
The Twins were threatening to score in the top of the seventh inning in the first game, with the Lumbermen leading 2-1. The bases were loaded with two outs but Conigliaro got Dalton Stamper to ground out to end the game.
"I was just trying to make sure to go out there and throw strikes," Conigliaro said of the seventh inning. "I started struggling early in the inning with throwing strikes. I kind of found it and battled in there."
In the second game Stamper, a left-hander, threw a complete game shutout despite a complete game thrown by Coeur d'Alene's Conner Cardinel.
"Both of our guys (Stamper and Kade Woods, who started the opener) are usually pretty good," Lewis-Clark coach Allen Balmer said. "That's a usual outing for them, so I'm glad to see them have that. Woods was really good. I think Woods just had that one rough inning. He walked a couple and hit a guy, but other than that, he was lights out. We need to be better with the bats to help those guys out to take the pressure off early in the game."
Kolt Olson hit a two-RBI single in the fourth inning to put the Twins up 3-0 in the second game.
The Twins beat the Lumbermen twice in Lewiston earlier in the season, and is now in the driver's seat for the No. 1 seed to the Area A (district) tournament, based on taking three of four from the second-place Lums in league play.
"I'd like to get two but just getting the split helps," Balmer said. "But now we have to go take care of business against Lakeland (Northern Lakes) and Prairie. We have two more with Prairie and four more with Lakeland, so we got to take care of business there so we can get that No. 1 seed going into districts."
Coeur d'Alene coach Zach Clanton said Coeur d'Alene's lack of offense resulted from good Lewis-Clark pitching and sub-par approaches at the plate.
"We had four strikeouts looking in the second game and a lot of them were on fastballs and it just makes me think that we're guessing a little bit," Clanton said. "There's just so little time to make a decision when you're in the box. I mean you can't be guessing. You just got to react. It only works if you're sitting fastball, then you adjust to the curve. We were definitely guessing and it was evident. You've got to tip your cap to him (Stamper) too for keeping us off balance to make us do that."
Coeur d'Alene next plays on Thursday at the Fourth of July Wood Bat Classic at Thorco Field, facing Northwest Prairie at 6 p.m. and the Bitterroot Red Sox at 8:30 p.m.
