Legion baseball: M.V. Mariners start Firecracker with a bang

POLSON — The Mission Valley Mariners gave up a run in the second inning, but blanked the Dillon Cubs for the rest of the game to take the opener of their host Polson Firecracker American Legion baseball tournament on Thursday.
The Mariners scored twice in the third inning to take the lead and scored at least one more run in the next three innings to win 7-1.
Derek Peel was 2 for 3 from the plate with a triple and a pair of RBIs and Nyqolas Gillingham was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Mariners. Bransen Krebs earned the win on the mound.
Earlier in the day, the Mariners’ B team lost to Livingston 17-1.
The other local teams split their games on the opening day.
Kootenai Valley beat the Missoula Pioneers 3-1 in their opener, getting an RBI single from CJ Henrie, while Sam Hannay allowed just one run for the Rangers on the mound.
The Rangers’ second game wasn’t as pretty, falling to the Helena Reps 13-2. The Reps score 13 runs in each of their games on Thursday, beating Libby 13-8.
The Loggers beat the Cranbrook Bandits 8-4 in their first contest of the tournament, Oliver Grupenhoff going 2 for 3 from the plate with a home run and two RBIs. Luke Haggerty was 3 for 5 batting and picked up the win on the mound.
