Makin' rain in Coeur d'Alene
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 9 years, 9 months AGO
More than 60 years after the film release of 'Singin' in the Rain,' the characters and story remain deeply embedded in American pop culture. Gene Kelly's routine in which he happily splashes through puddles while singing the film's title song is recreated or parodied often in television, film and commercials.
Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre will present the film's stage adaptation to local audiences July 9-26 at the Kroc Center, 1765 W. Golf Course Road, Coeur d'Alene.
"Despite its familiarity, it is a technically demanding show to produce, and CST is pulling out all the stops," said Jadd Davis, the theater's artistic director, in a press release. "Yes, we're going to make it rain. Yes, we're going to shoot a movie-within-a-play. Yes, there will be tap dancing galore. It's a lot of theater magic to pull off in our two-week rehearsal period, but our cast and crew is up to the task."
"Singing in the Rain" takes a light-hearted, satirical look at the evolution of the American movie industry in the 20th century, as silent movies give way to "talkies."
The character of Don Lockwood is played by John David Scott, a guest artist brought in from Seattle. Scott is making his Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre debut but is no stranger to Northwest stages. He was recently seen in "Funny Girl" at The Village Theatre.
The leading lady role of Kathy Spencer is played by Mallory King, the actress who played Mary Poppins for Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre in 2013.
During the show's run at the Kroc Center, performances will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. with 2 p.m. matinees on Saturdays and Sundays.
Tickets: $49/adult, $42/seniors and military personnel, $27/children 6-12. The show's producers ask theatergoers to refrain from bringing children younger than 6 to the show.
